Siemens Large Drive Applications

Since 2007, ESI has been providing engineering services to the Siemens Energy and Automation – Large Drive Applications Division supporting the installation of variable frequency drives (VFDs) in nuclear power plant applications including the following:

  • Performed the design and construction of a 4kV bus and bus enclosure transition cabinets at E.I. Hatch (Baxley, GA) Units 1 and 2 to support the replacement of the recirculation pump motor-generator sets with VFDs. This allowed the existing plant 4kV recirculation pump cables to be terminated in the transition cabinets without having to replace the cables, or splice onto the cables to reach their new termination locations in the VFDs.

  • Provided project management services for Siemens supporting the E.I. Hatch Unit 2 VFD installation.

  • Issued a commercial dedication report in accordance with the NRC endorsed EPRI Topical Report TR-106439 to document the acceptability of the Siemens provided VFDs in a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) recirculation pump drive application. This report included an evaluation of the VFD failure modes and the impact on plant operation, Siemens V&V, Configuration Control and documentation process.

  • Developed training plans/materials and provided engineering and maintenance training for the Siemens High Availability VFDs for E.I. Hatch, Brunswick (Southport, N. Carolina), and Quad Cities (Cordova, Illinois) personnel.

  • Developed the control power schematic drawings for the Siemens VFDs for issuance to E.I. Hatch, Brunswick, and Quad Cities.

  • ESI personnel are continuing to support Siemens in the integration of the VFDs in the Westinghouse AP1000 Reactor Coolant Pump speed control applications for both domestic and international installations.
